What is group travel insurance?
It’s travel insurance designed to cover a group of people that are going away on holiday together. Policies can insure each person in the group against a range of issues and eventualities, such as cancelled flights, stolen luggage or the need for emergency medical treatment due to an accident or illness.
Is group holiday insurance the same as family travel insurance?
No, it’s not quite the same as family travel insurance, which typically only covers relatives living at the same address (such as parents and children).
Group insurance is aimed at individuals who don’t necessarily live in the same house but are going away together – for instance if you’re off on a hen or stag party or just fancy a city break with a few friends.
What does travel insurance for groups cover?
Like all good travel insurance, your group travel policy should include cover for:
- Medical expenses – to pay for any treatment anyone in the group might need while abroad
- Repatriation – covers the cost of bringing members of the group home in an emergency
- Cancellation or curtailment – compensates you if your holiday is cancelled or cut short for reasons you can’t control
- Delayed or missed departure – covers costs if flights are delayed or if you miss it through no fault of your own
- Luggage cover – pays to replace any accidently lost, stolen or damaged luggage

What else should our group insurance policy cover?
Your coverage should reflect the activities you’ll be doing while you’re away. So, while standard group insurance will cover you for the usual holiday experiences like sightseeing and swimming, it might not cover the members of your party if the group holiday will involve anything more adventurous.
Depending on the nature of the activities you have planned, you might want to consider adding one or more of the following add-ons to your group travel insurance policy:
- Winter sports cover – for activities like skiing, snowboarding, glacier walking or sledging. Policies should also include mountain rescue.
- Adventure holiday cover – this could include a number of activities such as kayaking, pony trekking, sailing or rock climbing.
- Cruise cover – insures events unique to cruise holidays, such as missed port stops and cabin confinement
- Golf cover – insures essentials like your clubs, shoes and bag.
What group travel insurance exclusions are there?
Pretty much all insurance policies come with exclusions, but they can vary from one policy to another. Having said that, some of the most common exclusions include:
- Pre-existing medical conditions – insurers are unlikely to compensate you if you need to claim because of a pre-existing illness. If you’re struggling to find cover because of this, think about one of the many specialist insurers instead.
- Age – some insurers set age limits which could be as low as 65, which would mean that anyone over the limit wouldn’t be covered under your group travel insurance. If you’re all over a certain age think about specific over 60s, 70s, 75s or 80s travel insurance as an alternative.
- Too much alcohol or drugs – you’re unlikely to get any compensation if your claim is because you’ve drunk too much alcohol or taken illegal drugs.
- Wrong travel documents – your insurer won’t pay out if you have to cancel your holiday because you didn’t renew your passport or sort out a visa in time.
Do we need group travel insurance if everyone has an EHIC?
A European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) means you can get the same level of medical treatment as locals. In some countries, this can be treatment at a reduced price or for free – but only from a state-funded hospital.
With that in mind, as useful as an EHIC is, it’s no substitute for good travel insurance. If you’re on holiday somewhere remote or need airlifting to hospital, you’ll be expected to pay for private care and an air ambulance which can cost tens of thousands.
Is group insurance cheaper?
It can sometimes be cheaper to take out a group holiday insurance policy instead of taking separate policies for each party in the group, but a lot does depend on your own circumstances. If you’re all relatively young and healthy with no pre-existing medical conditions, group insurance can work out cheaper. In some cases, you might even get a discount for each person you add to the policy.
On the other hand, if your group spans a broad age range and you’ve got individuals over a certain age or with a health condition, you might be better off looking at separate policies.
Don’t forget – price will also depend on what you’re doing and whether you need additional protection such as winter sports cover. Insurers will also take into account:
- Where you go – you can choose from UK, European or worldwide policies. Bear in mind that worldwide is often split to either include or exclude the USA and Canada so check your policy covers the country you’re going to.
- How long you’re going for – if you just want group insurance for one holiday, then a single-trip policy will give you the cover you need. If your group is planning a number of getaways within a 12-month period, though, an annual (or multi-trip) policy could work out better value.
