Thanks to their practicality, MPVs are becoming more and more popular. Whether you drive yours for private or business use, or its used by your church or charity, it’s vital to have cover you can rely on. To make sure you get the best value for money, here’s what to consider when it comes to MPV insurance.
What is an MPV?
MPV stands for multi-purpose vehicle. MPVs are generally bigger than traditional cars and usually carry at least seven passengers.
MPVs typically have a host of practical features too, for instance, sliding doors and vast boot space. Seats can also sometimes be arranged in different ways to give users maximum flexibility.
Do I need MPV insurance?
If you drive an MPV you must have appropriate vehicle insurance. If your MPV has less than nine seats, a standard car insurance policy should still cover you. If in doubt, check with your insurer as each of them sets their own terms and conditions.
If your MPV has more than nine seats, you may need MPV insurance instead. This is because larger vehicles face different risks than smaller (standard-sized) cars and MPV insurance is designed with these considerations in mind, for example:
- MPVs generally carry more passengers which increases the risk of an expensive claim.
- Larger vehicles are more likely to do more damage increasing claim costs.
- Larger vehicles typically cost more to fix.
If you don’t have appropriate insurance for the type of vehicle you drive, you risk invalidating whatever policy you have. This means that your insurer can refuse to pay out if you need to make a claim.
What does MPV insurance cover?
MPV insurance will cover the same risks as other types of vehicle insurance so you’ll be able to choose from:
- Third party only – covers injury and damage to other people and their property. These policies will also compensate the passengers you carry. Bear in mind that third party only won’t cover your injuries and won’t pay to repair your MPV. This is the minimum level of cover you can have by law.
- Third party, fire and theft – includes third party only cover and will also pay to repair or replace your MPV if it’s stolen or damaged by fire.
- Comprehensive – includes third party, fire and theft cover and will also cover costs if your MPV is damaged in an accident, even if the accident is your fault. This is the highest level of cover you can buy.
Policies can include other features which cover you for a range of other events – for example, breakdown cover, windscreen cover and driving in Europe.
You’ll also need to let your insurer know how you use your MPV – for instance whether you use it for social, domestic, pleasure reasons only or if you’re also using it for business. This is known as the vehicle’s ‘class of use’.
It’s important to make sure that the class of use described in your policy matches the way you actually use your MPV. If it doesn’t (for example if you have it listed as personal use but you’re using it as a taxi your policy will be invalid.
How much is MPV insurance?
Premiums for MPV insurance can vary considerably depending on a number of factors, including:
- The MPV you own – the more expensive or powerful your MPV, the higher your premium is likely to be.
- Your age – drivers under 25 typically pay significantly more than drivers in other age groups.
- Security – the harder your MPV is to steal, the more favourable your premium is likely to be. If you don’t have off-road parking, it could be worth investing in an immobiliser to try and keep insurance costs down.
When you compare MPV insurance, don’t be put off by expensive quotes. You might find they include more features as standard and give you greater all-round protection making them good value for money.
That’s not to say cheap MPV insurance can’t be a great deal – just that it’s important to compare before making assumptions based on price alone.
How can I get cheap MPV insurance?
Comparing quotes really is the easiest way to find the best value cover – letting you see what’s being offered and at what cost. Of course, there are ways to shave even more off your premium – here are some ideas:
- Pay for your policy in one go to avoid interest fees.
- Make sure named drivers are over 25, preferably with no penalty points.
- Boost your MPVs security with an approved security device like an immobiliser.
- Increase your voluntary excess as this can lower your overall premium.
- Improve your driving skills by passing an advanced driving course.
