Do I need separate caravan insurance for my trip to France?

You do not need to purchase specialist insurance to travel to France with your touring caravan. You will want to ensure that you have covered your caravan against damage, loss or theft before you travel. Without the relevant cover, you will receive no financial support to cover the cost of the caravan or its contents.

What documents do I need to take my touring caravan to France?

Whilst you will not need to buy specialist cover, you will need to take specific documents to avoid any awkward conversations with the French police.

Post Brexit, you will be required to carry two green cards, one for the vehicle you are driving and another for the caravan.

It is worth noting that if you have a paper driving licence, you will need to buy an IDP (International Driving Permit). If you have a photographic driving licence, you will not need one.

You will need to carry evidence of your car insurance and tourer insurance. French police will expect you to be able to show this should they ask for it.

If stopped you will be expected to show your MOT certificate, insurance certificates and a letter from the owner authorizing use if the caravan is not yours.

What equipment do the French expect me to take with me?

Whilst you might be tempted to pack your tourer to the rafters when going on holiday, if visiting France there are some essentials you must remember to include.

To be legally compliant with French motoring laws you will need:

Warning Triangles – this must be erected behind your vehicle should you break down.

Fluorescent Jacket for the driver – once you have exited a broken-down vehicle, you must stand at the side of the road, the driver must be wearing a fluorescent jacket.

Breathalyser kits – ideally you should carry two of these kits. If you are stopped and tested, using one of the kits, you will then find yourself breaking the law if you are left with none.

Spare bulbs – you are legally required to carry a full set of replacement bulbs.

GB sticker – you must identify yourself as British when travelling in France.

French police are not prone to taking a sympathetic view when travellers fail to adhere to these rules.

Can I take my pet with me when I travel to France?

The French authorities will allow you to take your pet into the country, if you have had your pet micro-chipped and vaccinated against rabies.

Do I need separate health insurance when I travel to France?

Whilst the European Health Insurance Card will no longer be renewed post Brexit, if it is still valid it will afford you some cover if needed.
