Learner Motorbike Insurance
If you’re learning to drive a motorbike, you’ll need to consider your insurance whilst on a provisional license. A learner motorbike insurance policy is a specialist form of coverage that covers you as a provisional licence holder. If you’re currently learning to ride at a training school this may be included already in your fees. Private lessons may also allow you to be covered as a student under your instructors coverage. This will only cover you for the time that you are driving with your instructor however.
If you want to clock up some extra hours training however, you’ll need to sort out your own learners insurance in order to legally drive your motorbike. This is to protect you and others from uninsured accidents where you would otherwise be unable to pay for damages you may cause in an accident. If you want to take out coverage beyond the minimum legal requirement, you can opt for a more comprehensive policy to ensure that your own vehicle is covered in the event of an at-fault accident.
You should note that as soon as you pass your practical test, your learner motorbike insurance will not be valid. You’ll then need to move to a standard motorbike insurance policy.
How much is learner motorbike insurance?
Generally speaking, you can expect to pay more for learner motorbike insurance than a standard motorbike insurance policy. This is due to learner drivers having no previous experience or driving history for the insurer to asses. There are some things that you can do reduce the costs of your learner motorbike insurance however:
- Take your CBT course as soon as possible. The sooner you get your CBT certificate, the sooner you can start shopping around for insurance.
- Choose a smaller bike. Smaller bikes are typically cheaper to insure than larger bikes.
- Get a good safety rating. Insurers will take into account the safety rating of your bike when they calculate your premium.
- Add a named driver with a good driving history. Adding a named driver with a good driving history can help to reduce your premium.
- Take out a comprehensive policy. A comprehensive policy will cover you for more eventualities, such as theft and damage, and will typically be cheaper than a third party, fire and theft policy.
