Teachers Car Insurance – Compare Cheap Quotes

You may already know that most car insurance providers use your occupation or profession as one of the variables in their insurance premium calculations.

The reason your occupation can influence the cost of your car insurance is that insurance claims data suggests that drivers in some occupations are more likely to be involved in an at-fault accident than others.

If you’re a teacher this fact should be welcome news, because many insurers recognise teaching as one of the lower risk occupations for car insurance, which means car insurance for teachers often works out cheaper.

Why is teachers car insurance cheaper?

Firstly, it’s important to bear in mind that your occupation is just one of the variables car insurance companies will use when calculating your insurance premiums, so it’s not guaranteed you’ll be offered cheap car insurance just because you’re a teacher.

Your location, your driving record, your criminal record, your history of insurance claims, the size of your No Claims Discount, the make and model of car you drive, whether you use that car for business or commuting or purely for domestic purposes, where you park the car during the day and overnight, the level of coverage you’d like to take out and the amount of excess you’re willing to accept can all influence whether or not you teacher car insurance is actually cheap.

However, all other things being equal, car insurance companies believe that teachers have better risk profiles, on average, than people in many other professions, and this fact is often reflected in cheaper car insurance quotes for teachers.

Perhaps people in the teaching profession are less likely to speed, perhaps they are less inclined to overtake on dangerous corners or take other unnecessary risks while driving, but whatever the reason for the difference insurance claims data indicates that teachers make fewer at-fault insurance claims than people in many other professions, and that fact may well be reflected in cheap car insurance for teachers.

It’s also worth mentioning that roughly 70% of teachers in the UK are women, while just 30% are men. While the introduction of the EU Gender Directive in 2012 means car insurance for women can’t be cheaper just because the policyholders are female, the fact remains that insurance claims data reveals that women are safer drivers than men, and this fact is almost certainly reflected in the lower level of insurance claims for those jobs that are predominantly performed by women.

Is it true primary school teachers benefit from the cheapest car insurance quotes?

Yes, the type of teaching you specialise in can influence the cost of a teacher car insurance policy as well, and research suggests primary school teachers are often offered slightly lower quotes than secondary school teachers.

It’s possible this could also be influenced by the same statistics revealing that women are generally better drivers (and therefore less likely to claim on their insurance) than men, because while 70% of teachers overall are female, more than 80% of primary school teachers are female according to the Department for Education.

By contrast, PE teachers are often quoted slightly higher car insurance premiums than other members of the teaching profession, and approximately 50% of physical education teachers are male.

What level of coverage should I opt for if I’m taking out teachers car insurance?

There are three levels of car insurance coverage available in the UK:

  • Third party: This is the minimum level of coverage required under UK law, and is essentially intended to protect other drivers when you take to the roads, hence the name ‘third party’. If you opt for this level of coverage your insurance provider will cover the cost of damage to other people’s cars or property if you are involved in an at-fault accident, but damage to your own car wouldn’t be covered.

  • Third party, fire, and theft: This level of coverage offers the same protection as third party insurance, but will also cover you if your own car is stolen or damaged by fire.

  • Fully comprehensive car insurance: As the name suggests, fully-comp is the most comprehensive level of cover a driver can take out in the UK. This type of policy includes everything that’s covered by TPFT, but will also cover the cost of repairing or replacing the vehicle of an at-fault driver. This type of insurance will also pay out if you’re involved in an accident with an uninsured driver, which isn’t covered by lower levels of cover.

In the past price-sensitive motorists often opted for third party only cover because the fact that it was less comprehensive meant the premiums were often a little lower. However, in recent years car insurance companies have begun hiking the premium for third party policies because they recognise that this type of insurance is often favoured by riskier drivers (young drivers, newly qualified drivers or drivers with penalty points or driving convictions, for instance).

In practice that means you shouldn’t automatically opt for a third-party policy if you’re looking for the cheapest teachers’ car insurance. Since fully-comp is sometimes (but not always) cheaper, the best plan is to compare quotes for all three levels of coverage in order to see which type of policy offers you the best teacher car discounts.
